Founded in 2007, the Icelandic Motorcycle Museum stands as a tribute to Heiðar Þ. Jóhannsson and Iceland’s rich motorcycling history. In this talk, Tómas Ingi Jónsson will discuss the museum’s origins, its evolving collection, and its role in safeguarding and showcasing Iceland’s cultural and technological motorcycle heritage.
Tómas Ingi Jónsson serves on the board of the Icelandic Motorcycle Museum and oversees the management of its collections, including the significant contributions of Heiðar Þ. Jóhannsson. He is actively engaged in preserving and presenting Iceland’s motorcycling heritage through the museum’s exhibitions and programs.

The Motorcycle and Iceland: A History of Motorcycling in Iceland
This talk will explore the evolution of motorcycles in Iceland, tracing their technological, social, and cultural impact from early adoption to present day. Njáll will also examine connections between Icelandic motorcycling and American bike culture, offering a comparative perspective on transnational influences.
Njáll Gunnlaugsson is a leading authority on the history of motorcycles in Iceland. An accomplished author, he has published books on the development of motorcycling culture in Iceland and on American motorcycles. His research offers unique insights into the cultural and historical significance of motorcycling in Icelandic society.
